Iconik vs Frame.io, in one line: Iconik is a media asset manager that sits on top of storage you choose, billed per user from $0 to $120 a month. Frame.io is a review and approval platform with storage included, at $15 per member per month on Pro with 2 TB per member. For a five-person shop, Frame.io Pro is $75 a month all in; five Iconik Standard users are $325 a month before storage.
Prices checked September 2026 on the Iconik pricing page and the Frame.io pricing page, both read on 23 September 2026.
They overlap on the words "media management" and on basic review. They are built for different jobs, so the right choice depends on which job is hurting.

What each tool is for
Iconik is the vault and the catalogue. It indexes media wherever it already lives, in cloud buckets or on storage in your building, and lays metadata, search and AI tagging over the top. When someone asks for every drone shot from every job since 2022, Iconik is the tool that finds them without anyone combing folders. Its Starter plan lists hybrid storage with on-premise and cloud connections, AI metadata enrichment and visual search.
Frame.io is the screening room. Clients open a link, scrub a cut, and leave frame-accurate comments. Frame.io says external reviewers do not need an account. It is built into Premiere, has a Final Cut Pro integration, and includes Camera to Cloud on every plan, the free one included.
Iconik does have review, and Frame.io does hold files. But ask each to do the other's main job and you feel it.
Pricing for a five-person shop
Take five people, about 10 TB of active work, and the prices listed on 23 September 2026.
Frame.io Pro: 5 members × $15 = $75 a month. Storage is 2 TB for the first member plus 2 TB for each of the other four: 10 TB included. That is $7.50 per terabyte, with review and delivery thrown in. Billed annually, Frame.io takes 13% off.
Iconik Starter: 5 Standard Users × $65 = $325 a month, before storage. Iconik does not publish a per-terabyte price; the Starter plan says credits "consume storage, users, AI, and services as you go". If you bring your own storage, add that bill too: 10 TB on Backblaze B2 at $6.95 per TB is $69.50 a month (B2 pricing, checked 23 September 2026). Not everyone needs a Standard seat. People who only review can go on the cheaper Collaborator and Browse User types, which changes the total a lot.
So for a small shop whose problem is getting cuts approved, Frame.io is the cheaper answer by a wide margin. The gap narrows only when most of the team needs catalogue access rather than full seats.
Where Iconik wins
- Large libraries on storage you already own. Iconik is built to index media across many storage locations, cloud and on-premise, without moving it. Frame.io stores what you upload to Frame.io; Storage Connect, which points Frame.io at your own cloud bucket, is listed only on Enterprise.
- Metadata depth. Metadata tagging, AI enrichment, visual search and saved searches are the product, not an add-on.
- Mixed seat types. Paying $0 or $9 a month for people who only browse or comment is cheaper than a full seat for everyone, once the team grows past a handful.
Where Frame.io wins
- Client review. Share a link, get timecoded notes, version the cut. This is what Frame.io was built for and it shows.
- Price for a small team. $15 a member with 2 TB each is hard to beat below five people.
- Adobe shops. Creative Cloud subscribers who sign in with their Adobe ID get an enhanced free Frame.io plan with 100 GB of storage, up to 5 projects with another user, and Camera to Cloud, according to Adobe's Frame.io for Creative Cloud FAQ (last updated 27 March 2026, read 23 September 2026). For a Premiere editor with one client, that can be enough to never pay.
- Mounted storage. Frame.io Drive mounts a project in Finder. Pro includes 250 GB of mounted storage and Team 500 GB, a separate allocation from normal storage. See the Frame.io Drive and pricing breakdown for how that quota works.
Where Shade fits
Shade is the third name on most shortlists. It is an AI search and storage platform: Growth is $35 per seat per month, or $29.75 billed annually, with 500 GB of active storage per seat and up to 15 seats (Shade pricing, checked 23 September 2026). It is closer to Iconik's search job than to Frame.io's review job, at a smaller scale.
If you are choosing between Shade and Frame.io specifically, read Frame.io vs Shade: Review Tool or Media Brain?, which covers that comparison in full.
Which one to pick
- Your loudest problem is client approvals: Frame.io.
- Your loudest problem is finding media across years of jobs and several storage locations: Iconik.
- Your loudest problem is multi-editor work in one project: neither is the first move. Look at a shared project server first, for example Blackmagic Cloud for Resolve teams, then add one of these for review or search.
- Your loudest problem is the storage bill: audit before you scale.
The trap for a small shop is buying both at once. Pick the one that solves the loudest problem, and add the second only when a second loud problem appears that the first cannot stretch to cover.
What to do before you pick
Whichever platform you land on, you will upload or index your media into it. Most projects carry a large share of media that never reached a timeline, and every per-terabyte or per-seat plan charges you to hold it.
Clip Sweeper reads your Premiere and Resolve projects and shows which media a timeline uses and which was imported and forgotten. Run it before you size a plan. The storage calculator compares the per-terabyte cost of the remainder across providers.
